The Pikes Peak Sentinel Landscape, located in central Colorado, encompasses five military installations and two major training areas representing three Military Service branches. The region’s aerospace and defense sectors drive more than 40% of the local economy and continue to fuel significant population growth. While these industries provide substantial economic and community benefits, the military installations and training areas face shared challenges that threaten long-term mission readiness. These include incompatible development, increasing wildfire risk, watershed degradation, vulnerabilities to water and energy infrastructure, and the need to conserve sensitive species and habitats. Expanding development near installation boundaries, the growing frequency and severity of wildfires, flooding, and erosion, infrastructure vulnerabilities, and environmental constraints associated with protected species all have the potential to affect military operations and resilience.

The United States Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Schriever Space Force Base, Peterson Space Force Base, and Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station all experience these common pressures. Expanding development near installation boundaries, the growing frequency and severity of wildfires, flooding, and erosion, infrastructure vulnerabilities, and environmental constraints associated with protected species all have the potential to affect military operations and resilience.

Federal, state, and local partners have worked collaboratively for years to address these challenges. Through the Pikes Peak Sentinel Landscape, these efforts are now aligned under a coordinated, strategic framework that builds on existing partnerships and investments. This collaborative approach strengthens landscape resilience, advances natural resource conservation, and supports the long-term health and sustainability of surrounding communities while ensuring military installations can continue to accomplish their missions effectively.
